Is The Stock Market For Beginners?

Summary: This article offers a few tips that should be noted about the stock market for beginners. Of course, there are many different suggestions that can be made on this topic - thousands of ideas probably - which would all be worthy of their place. Alas, we have neither the time nor the space to devote to everything we can think of. Instead, newcomers to investment and the process of buying and selling securities can start with these three important ideas...

1. Learn to have an inquisitive mind and read a lot. There are no two ways about it, stock market investment is all about information. Those with the better quality information or who have access to the same information more quickly, can and will make more money. Successful investment requires accurate and reliable decision making and such decisions need reliable and accurate facts to support or deny the process.

In other words, if you don’t like books or the financial pages of the daily newspaper, you probably will not like investment. And if you cannot commit yourself to regular reading of the financial pages, corporate annual reports (which are not generally very appealing) and books about investment technique, you will not have access to the right information and so will be forced to invest based on luck, astrology or - worst of all - tips from people that know no more than you do.

For the record, luck, astrology and tips from friends of friends are not generally considered to be the most successful way of picking stocks. In fact, in a profession in which out performance is the exception rather than the norm, luck generally should not be much of a factor.

2. Study Warren Buffett and his methods. What? I am suggesting that you try and copy someone? What sort of fraud am I?

Well, the reality is that the methods of Warren Buffett are incredibly logical. Quite how he manages to do so well is a mystery to most of us in the investment world. However, I think that most stock market investors can agree that if you can apply logic to decision making as ruthlessly as he clearly can, then success can and should follow.

Amazingly, Warren Buffett Warren Buffett always seems to be two or three steps ahead of the market. It is incredible to follow him over time. He has exceptional skills at judging the real - and perceived - value of both a business and brand. And as I have mentioned elsewhere, valuation is at the core of investment.

Many books have been written about Buffett and his methods. My advice would be to try and select three or four and read them thoroughly. By the time you have finished the fourth, you will know for sure what it takes to be a successful investor and ultimately, you will know - deep inside - whether or not you can ’cut it’. This is vital information.

3. Become comfortable with numbers. There is no way around this, business keeps score by using numbers that represent money. The stock market is the same. Many beginners seem to overlook this rather obvious fact and quickly become bored by ’all those numbers’. If this might be you, your investment career may well prove to be two things. Short and expensive.

In truth, the stock market probably is not a place for beginners. Whilst anyone can make money - and many do - the majority of stock market beginners will make several losing investments at first. We all do that - I did - but most beginners are also often the people that are least able to afford to make losing investments.

Investment is work for millions of very intelligent and hard working individuals around the world. If it is hard work for them, we need to accept that it will take some considerable effort from us to succeed. So, is the stock market for beginners? The answer is a firm "maybe" - it depends upon the beginner!
