The World Of The Hedge Fund

A subject which receives occassional attention from the press is that of the hedge fund. There is no point in kidding each other, this is a very technical and little understood area of finance - and yet an area with massive influence on global markets.

A hedge fund is part of what we know as 'hot money' - investment funds that can be moved round the world at a moments notice whilst looking for the best opportunity available. Their terms of reference generally allow them to invest in almost any asset class in any country.

In my position as an international adviser, I was able to meet several members of management at a couple of funds. It would be fair to say that they did not explain everything, but they helped join some of the dots. This has enabled me to write with a certain amount of knowledge and experience that many journalists or personal finance editors have lacked.

I hope that the following articles highlight a few of the risks associated with investing in a hedge fund and explain why they are not generally designed for the 'man on the street'.
